More than 40 million people in America lost their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown, jeopardizing access to food that meets basic nutritional needs. To support those experiencing this disruption to their SNAP benefits, Shipt donated $100,000 to nonprofits and food banks in our home state Alabama, and waived the membership fee for our SNAP members across the country.*  

Food banks are facing an unprecedented need and are on the front lines of supporting people facing hunger–which is why Shipt donated $100,000 to help provide meals to food banks and nonprofits supporting central Alabama and the metro Birmingham area. In our home state of Alabama, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children struggle with having enough food. 

Reducing barriers to healthy food is one of the most important things we do at Shipt. We have long offered a reduced membership for SNAP recipients, which includes $0 delivery fees on orders over $35. The reduced monthly membership fee was waived on November 1st for all SNAP members for two months.

Shipt is proud to waive membership fees for our SNAP members and to increase our support for food banks and nonprofits in our hometown community.” 

Other Ways Shipt Supports Communities 

Research shows that grocery delivery services improve access to healthy foods, and we will continue to work with our partners to evaluate how we can further support SNAP recipients during this period of uncertainty.

Over the past four years, Shipt has awarded more than 80 Community Impact & Innovation Grants, totaling nearly $1.3 million to date, supplying more than 2.8 million meals for more than 520,000 food-insecure individuals. Through our longtime partnership with Feeding America, we’ve directly donated over $1.5 million to support their efforts to get food and resources to the millions of people they serve.
