The Power of Flexibility: How Shoppers Make Work Fit Their Lives
Flexible work is a core part of the Shipt experience. For shoppers and drivers with Shipt, that means having the freedom to decide when, where, and how often they work.
A 2026 Shipt survey of shoppers and drivers found that autonomy and flexibility are among their top priorities for app-based work.
For many, that freedom makes it possible to fit work around the rest of their lives – whether they’re balancing a full-time job, pursuing an education, caring for family members, or managing other priorities.
Shipt’s technology empowers shoppers and drivers with unparalleled flexibility to build work around their busy lives, not the other way around – whether that's during kids’ school hours, after full-time work, or between caregiving duties.
Preserving Flexibility
For those earning with Shipt, flexibility is more than a preference: it is essential. App-based work helps pay bills, fund education, or earn extra income for hobbies and travel.
With 85% of shoppers and drivers working fewer than 10 hours a week with Shipt, our platform is designed to remain accessible to those seeking supplemental income.
That’s why preserving the flexible work model is so important. When asked their concerns regarding potential government regulations that could impact app-based work, shoppers and drivers said they were most concerned that regulations could lead to reduced flexibility including their ability to choose how often they work.
Flexibility In Action
Shoppers and drivers with Shipt come from all backgrounds, but they nearly all share one thing in common: a preference for flexible work. Meet three shoppers who work around their busy lives to supplement their incomes:
Peg is a retired educator in Michigan using Shipt’s platform to earn primary income with Shipt, preferring a flexible work schedule so she can spend more time with her grandchild.
“As a teacher, I really was not flexible in that job, but now having a grandchild, I am so thrilled to have a flexible role with Shipt,” said Peg. “It's just so wonderful. I can come and go with the job as I please, which is just perfect for me right now.”
Peg started shopping with Shipt in her free time while she was still working full time as an educator. Of surveyed educators who shop with Shipt, 95% report using the platform to supplement their income, with the majority choosing to shop seasonally during spring, summer, and winter break.
“Having balance in my life right now is wonderful because I can do things during the day that I couldn't do before,” Peg adds. “Maybe put food in a crock pot in between orders, or run some errands that in my prior career could only be done on Saturdays. Having the flexibility to do that just gives me more free time, which is just perfect for me right now in my life and where I'm at."
Kimberly is an educator and a school counselor in Georgia who shops on the weekend to provide for her two teenaged sons.
“[I realized] that my current career was not helping enough [to pay the bills], I had to figure out something else, and Shipt was my answer,” said Kim. “There were times where I was trying to figure out the next meal for me and my sons, and to know that I could just put myself on the app, put myself on the schedule with Shipt, and go out there and grab a few jobs … [making sure that my financial needs are met].”
Winton is a school bus driver in New York who shops with Shipt in his free time – on weekends and sometimes during layovers on his bus routes – to support his family with extra income.
“The flexibility that Shipt offers is far beyond anything that the other apps offer, and that allows orders to come through when you're available, and you're not obligated to do any of those orders like with other delivery services.”*
