Shipt Reflects on This Year’s Summer Internship Program
This summer, Shipt hosted 46 interns. The program has not only doubled in size in recent years, but interest has soared with a record number of applicants spanning 9 different departments.
Gone are the days of interns running errands and making coffee for the team. At Shipt, interns are gaining hands-on, practical experience such as building Chrome extensions, writing copy for an external audience and trend forecasting. The knowledge and skills gained over the course of a 10-week period could easily explain why the Shipt team spends countless hours sifting through thousands of applications every spring from college students anxious to receive a chance at interning with a tech company.
Interns can apply to a variety of departments including Technology, Marketing, Data Science, Product, and Corporate Communications. This year, we expanded the program to also include DEI, Corporate Strategy, Legal and Finance. On average, we see more than 200 applications submitted for each of the non-technology specific internship spots and a staggering 500 applicants for each tech specific internship role.
“What drove me to Shipt was their dedication to their DEI efforts that they can speak to, diversity throughout the organization–all the way up to the C-Suite– and engagement in their local communities,” said DEI intern Thomas Cheese.
One aspect that makes Shipt’s internship program unique is for the past three summers it’s been entirely virtual. The program utilizes tools like Zoom and Slack to facilitate meaningful connections between team members.
“Being in a virtual environment, I actually found myself more motivated, engaged and collaborative with team members since I wasn’t able to work with them in person,” said HR intern Jada Banks.
Not only do interns gain professional skills during their time with Shipt, even if that’s while doing so remotely, but they are challenged with completing a Capstone or Personal Project to demonstrate what they learned. Capstone Projects provide the opportunity for the interns to teach the organization while Personal Projects give interns the opportunity to use their time at Shipt to work towards a personal or academic goal or project. Projects span from building internal systems to receiving certifications in the interns’ area of interest. Interns are also responsible for weekly tasks to support and propel their team forward.
“Not only have I made professional connections but I think I’ve made friends. That’s the goal really. Shipt is now the gold-standard for employment for me,” said cyber security intern Jake Morris.
We are proud to say that over 75% of college students entering their junior year of college return to Shipt to complete a second summer internship and historically 50% of graduating seniors are offered and accept full-time positions.
