Recap: How Shipt’s Employee Resource Group, empoWered, Led Team Members in Celebrating Women's History Month This Year

Continuing to foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture to us means taking time to learn about, support and celebrate those who make up the greater Shipt team and the communities we serve and in March, we were excited to honor Women’s History Month.

At Shipt today, women represent 64 percent of executive leadership and about half of the overall team. And we’re proud that we’ve been recognized by Women Impact Tech with a spot on their 2023 Women Impact Tech 100 List as one of the top progressive companies empowering women in tech. Shipt has an Employee Resource Group (ERG) for women and allies called empoWered, whose mission is to positively inspire a diverse network of women and allies within the Shipt community. And team members also engage throughout the year in Shipt’s Women in Engineering Group, which focuses on nurturing and growing women working in tech roles at Shipt through an annual, internal conference called Spark, mentorship opportunities and more.

Throughout Women’s History Month, empoWered hosted a number of events and activities to help educate and encourage women and allies across the Shipt team. Shipt employees spent months brainstorming, planning and leading impactful activities and providing resources that opened spaces for team members and leaders to share their individual stories, including:

Driving Awareness Around Allyship

Employees shared third-party audio, visual and online resources to coach team members on being an ally to women at home, at work and in the world. Topics included “Division of labor and mental load” and “Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself.”

Supporting Women through Community Volunteering

Shipt team members got out into their communities and volunteered at organizations like Pathways Women’s Shelter in Birmingham and the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco, in addition to organizing a clothing drive for My Sister’s Closet, to support local women and girls in need.

"[My mom and grandmother] instilled in me the importance of remembering that our rights are not given, they are hard-fought and earned, and we must persist in fighting for our rights," said Jordan S., Experience Team Associate Manager and an empoWered leader. "I ultimately love how the Shipt community came together to celebrate countless women as well as honoring the women within this amazing company."

Encouraging with Team Affirmations

Every week of Women’s History Month was kickstarted with inspiration – beginning with ‘Affirmation Monday’s’ featuring encouraging quotes and gorgeous designs by women artists at Shipt and ending with ‘Yoga Flow Friday’s’ where team members could practice a sense of mindfulness, power and strength through various yoga sequences. Teams also shared weekly posts on how to be an ally to women at home, at work and in the world.

Motivating through Leadershipt Stories

Capping off Women’s History Month as the last of event, during the last week of the month, empoWered hosted a conversation about opportunity, influence and blazing a trail at work. Co-moderated by Jay Brown, an operations specialist at Shipt, the panel included members of Shipt’s executive team, including Amy Benson, chief people and community officer, Linda Seal, chief legal officer, Molly Snyder, chief communications officer and Mike Calvo, chief technology officer.

“At Shipt, our purpose is to spark connections,” said Amy Benson, chief people and community officer. “During my short time at Shipt, I’ve already seen the impact we can make when that purpose is brought to life – from celebrating uniqueness to creating inclusive spaces for individuals and their ideas. Participating on the Women in Leadershipt panel gave me the opportunity to listen to others around our community and reflect on my own experiences, and I look forward to continuing to grow our culture.”

At Shipt, we’re proud of how our team members, empoWered and leaders show up and  create spaces that celebrate and uplift one another, both during Women’s History Month and each and every day throughout the year.
