The Results Are in! Shipt Data Shows Americans have Polarizing Opinions When it Comes to Dressing Hot Dogs
Ketchup is a classic and nationwide continues to reign supreme when it comes to adding flavor to a hot dog. However, Shipt data shows people also reach for condiments like mustard, relish, coleslaw, chili and sauerkraut.
It may be a habit to reach for the condiment classics like ketchup, mustard and relish before consuming a hot dog, but Shipt data shows depending on where in the United States you live you may also have a strong preference for other toppings like chili (in the summertime?) Or sauerkraut (no judgment if this is you, just be sure to add some chewing gum to your Shipt cart as well, wink wink), and in some places, even coleslaw.
We analyzed Shipt marketplace data in the 14 days leading up to the Fourth of July holiday for two years straight. While some of our results may be head scratching, overall it confirms what we’ve always thought to be true; Americans LOVE their hot dogs. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council around 150 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July. Below you will see that depending on where you live it truly determines how you dress up, or down, your hot dog before consuming it.
Southwest
Overall, the Southwest and Midwest LOVE their condiments. People in Texas and Oklahoma prefer chili but our data shows they are also purchasing ketchup, mustard and relish. Arizonians and Coloradans without question reach for ketchup and mustard the most, but occasionally reach for the chili. And in Arkansas, it’s safe to say people love their relish as the state purchases it more than any other state in the midwest. Although ketchup is the number one most sold condiment in Arkansas, relish isn’t far behind in the second spot.
Northeast and West
Folks in both the Northeast and West just aren’t as interested in dressing up a hot dog as other regions of the country. In the Northeast don’t even think about putting coleslaw or chili on a hot dog, and in the West don’t bother with the coleslaw or sauerkraut, as those were the least purchased condiments in those regions. Ketchup, although not as popular in other regions, was still purchased quite a bit making it the most popular condiment in the northeast and west.
Southeast
Talk about keeping it simple: ketchup and mustard are two of the top purchased condiments year after year in the southeast. However, residents in both Tennessee and Mississippi favor relish. But don’t rule out sauerkraut in other southern states like Alabama, Florida and South Carolina where it has earned a coveted spot on the top purchased list.
Midwest
It’s safe to say residents in the midwest aren’t afraid to try new things, especially when it comes to adding additional flavors to their hot dog. They are the top purchasers of just about every single condiment we reviewed. Michigan, Indiana and Ohio are the top purchasers of coleslaw while Kansas is buying the most sauerkraut in the midwest. Although ketchup and mustard still outperform both coleslaw and sauerkraut overall.
