Shipt Partners with Pivot to Create New Opportunities in Tech
Shipt has partnered with Pivot Technology School to empower diverse talent to pursue technology careers.
Shipt is a people-first company. In keeping with our objective to fuel innovation through a diverse, engaged, and purpose driven team, we have partnered with Pivot Technology School to sponsor 32 individuals who will participate in a 20-week program where they will learn core competencies to backend development and data analytics.
Starting July 26, students will begin a five month program providing hands-on practice designing backend development using Golang and other coding fundamentals. They will also learn core competencies of MVC Architecture, AJAX and Asynchronous Programming, and functional programming.
With the newly formed partnership with Pivot, Shipt’s goal is not only to identify and hire tech and data employees for Shipt HQ, but create a healthy ecosystem of applicants for the broader Birmingham-based technology industry.
"There are less than 3% of minorities that have tech careers and we want to change that paradigm and create pipelines of highly trained talent to these organizations. We want to expose as many adults as possible to coding and data analytics,” said Pivot founder, Josh Mundy.
As a leader in the technology education space, Pivot Technology School specializes in providing industry-leading tech skills with a unique and innovative approach. The school offers two career paths in software development Front End Web Development and Full Stack Engineering and a Data Analytics career path.
To ensure prospective participants aren’t hindered from participating due to financial reasons, Shipt removed all financial barriers that typically prevent individuals from pursuing a tech job. All 32 students enrolled in the program received a full scholarship from Shipt. Of the 32 students selected, 19 are current Shipt employees and 13 are external candidates that were selected from the applicant pool to participate alongside internal Shipt team members.
Speaking about how Shipt’s technology team innovates, builds, and manages infrastructure that inspires customers and supports the success of shoppers and retailers, Mike Calvo, the company’s Chief Technology Officer said:
“We’re an agile team with a great culture and have plans to expand by adding the very best talent to help impact our growth, which is why we invest in programs like Pivot to help creative individuals motivated to move into tech careers gain the skills and experience needed to move our company forward.”
Once applicants successfully complete the program, students will be eligible for jobs in data analytics and engineering at Shipt. Even if they choose not to pursue a career at Shipt, we’re confident they will have gained marketable skills that will set them up for success in a way that positively transforms the tech industry throughout the greater Birmingham area.
