Shipt Debuts Customers’ Most Popular Fourth of July Eats
Shipt Shoppers delivered more hot dogs, chicken, and ice cream than any other items around the Fourth of July holiday in 2020.
2020 was an unusual year for Americans celebrating the Fourth of July. Parades across the country were put on pause, large gatherings cancelled, and well-known firework displays went virtual. But one thing remained constant during the pandemic- chowing down on foods deemed patriotic.
Before you fire up the grill this year decked out in your red, white and blue, you may be wondering what others are adding to their lists. We have compiled the most requested grocery items through Shipt near the Fourth of July and the results reveal some surprising trends.
Meat remains the main event
It’s no secret hot dogs are synonymous with Independence Day in the United States and our data proves it. Between June 28 and July 5, 2020 Shipt Shoppers delivered 680,945 packages of hot dogs making it the most requested item compared to other 4th of July food staples reviewed. The state we’re deeming the hot dog king: Michigan, followed by Texas, Florida, Ohio, and Illinois.
It might surprise you that people who placed Shipt orders between the same time frame, June 28 and July 5, ordered more chicken than burgers, including both ground beef and pre-formed patties. 233,081 more packages to be exact. Rounding out the list of top meat choices is pork shoulder in fourth place with Minnesota being the state where people requested it the most.
The dish on sides and sauces
Don’t forget the sauces or sides - the data pulled shows our customers didn’t. 78,760 bottles of sauce were delivered with ketchup and BBQ sauce being the most requested condiments compared to mustard and relish. Which leads to the question: how much is too much of a good thing? Our shoppers learned last year that fresh tomatoes, the main ingredient in ketchup, were 10 times more popular than the squeezable sauce itself, followed by onions and packs of cheese slices. Potato chips, corn on the cob and potatoes made the list for top three favorite sides among Shipt orders near Fourth of July.
Red, white, and blue with a side of green
And if you try to keep your celebrations somewhat balanced, you’re not alone. 157,757 bags of salad were sold in the days leading up to Independence Day 2020. We don’t want to discredit those who prioritized their greens, but we do know more people reached for a spoon to eat ice cream. 345,618 tubs of ice cream were dropped off to front doorsteps making it the third most requested item out of the 28 grocery items reviewed.
America’s sweet spot for desserts
Now for those who left room for dessert, ice cream reigned supreme (of course), followed by Jell-O and apple pie. We’d like to think pie placed third because our members instead opted to make theirs from scratch. Strawberry or blueberry pie anyone? Shipt Shoppers picked up a combined 215,038 containers of strawberries and blueberries in the 8-day span. In a head scratching review, strawberries beat out watermelon with 46,000 more requests for the fruit.
On ice
If you live in Florida chances are you are washing all this down with iced tea compared to lemonade, as the Sunshine State was ranked the highest consumer of iced tea ordered through Shipt around Fourth of July. Nationwide, Shipt delivered 75,392 bottles of iced tea compared to 42,434 bottles of lemonade. The state drinking the most lemonade was Michigan.
